Established in 1954 The Kaohsiung Medical University, known as Kaohsiung Medical College, is a private university located in Kaohsiung, Taiwan. Kaohsiung Medical College (KMC) was established by the former mayor of Kaohsiung City, Frank C. Chen, and Dr. Tu Tsung-Ming. The college was the first private institution in southern Taiwan at the time of its establishment. Three years after the establishment of KMC, the college hospital, the Chung-Ho Memorial Hospital, was founded in June 1957. In southern Taiwan, Chung-Ho Memorial Hospital is the largest medical center and serves as a teaching hospital. The Hsiao-kang Hospital, has been acquired by KMC In 1998. In August 1999, with the permission of the Ministry of Education, Taiwan, Kaohsiung Medical College was re-formed into the Kaohsiung Medical University (KMU). KMU was rated "superior" by the Ministry of Education, Taiwan in all categories of the "Mid-term School Administration Development Plan. The student-faculty ratio of 12:1 has been upheld by Kaohsiung Medical University. KMU offered over 36 academic programs in six faculties in the 2007-2008. The university also offers over 13 doctoral and masters graduate degree programs. KMU grants up to NT$35 million of scholarships every year. KMU is the only medical academic institution offering graduate-entry medical programs in Taiwan (the Faculty of Post-Bachelor Degree of Medicine. KMU is associated with eleven major research centers and networks, and is involved in research partnerships with other universities, government and industry in Taiwan and other countries. The university consists of six colleges: the College of Medicine, the College of Dentistry , the College of Pharmacy , the College of Nursing , the College of Health Science , and the College of Life Sciences since then. Kaohsiung Medical University celebrated its first half-century anniversary in 2004.
