Madurai Kamaraj University

Madurai Kamaraj University is located in Madurai city in southern Tamil Nadu, India. The University came into being through a bill passed in the Legislative Assembly of the State in the year 1965 but was established in 1966. On an average it has about 130,000 students in 18 schools. On 6 February 1966, the University was inaugurated based on the extension centre of the University of Madras, at Madurai. Its foundation stone for a new campus was laid in 1968 by Zakir Hussain, the President of India. It is one of the nine universities in India with a status of University with Potential for Excellence. It holds a total of 77 renowned Departments and 20 School currently. The University has 21 quasi academic supportive units and 21 academic centers. It has14 aided colleges, 33 self financing colleges, 24 autonomous colleges, 18 approved institutions, 6 constituent colleges, 4 evening colleges and one University College catering to the higher education needs of large number of students from rural and urban areas. In the honour of K. Kamaraj, former Chief Minister of Madras State, The name of the University was changed to Madurai Kamaraj University in 1978. The Madurai Kamaraj University offers 41 post graduates, 35 M.Phil. and 17 Diploma / P.G. Diploma / Certificate courses in the various departments. Currently, 66 U.G. and 45 P.G. courses are offered in the affiliated Colleges. Also, more than 163 individual research projects are being carried out with an outlay exceeding 34 Crores.
