The Anton Dohrn Zoological Station in Naples was founded in 1872 by German scientist Anton Dohrn. The Zoological Station is the most important research institutions in the world in the fields of marine biology and ecology. Founded with a mission to promote basic research, hosting scientists who needed to marine organisms for their studies, is now based on research carried out by its staff. The mission of the Zoological Station is the research on fundamental processes of biology, with specific reference to marine organisms and their diversity, in close connection with the study of their evolution and dynamics of marine ecosystems, through an integrated and interdisciplinary approach. The study of biotechnology applications result is apparently the mission of the organization. The Zoological Station also offers access to marine organisms for the international scientific community and higher education courses as part of its mission. From 1st May 2011, the Zoological Station responds to a statute that allowed the establishment of an active scientific community of reference.
