The University of Cape Town was established in the year 1829 as the South African College. The college became an autonomous university during 1880-1900. University of Cape Town is one of the oldest university in South Africa, started the departments of mineralogy and geology. Later in the year 1902-1918 Medical School, Engineering, Education departments were introduced. Supported by UCTs Centre for Higher Education Development the university has 6 faculties i.e. Commerce, Engineering & the Built Environment, Law, Health Sciences, Humanities and Science. Among its alumni are the late Professor Christiaan Barnard, the world-renowned heart surgeon, and three Nobel laureates, Sir Aaron Klug, the late Professor Alan MacLeod Cormack and JM Coetzee.
