The university awards for the categories "research", "teaching and study" and "administration" were awarded, each with 5,000 euros, as well as the Schmittmann Election Fellowship in recognition of the excellent study achievements. The institutional foundations of research at the University of Cologne are their 6 faculties with 102 study subjects and their 10 faculties of interdisciplinary research and teaching centers. Large, internationally competitive research focuses on the mechanisms of age-related diseases, plant breeding research, quantum materials and materials, social and economic behavior as well as the socio-economic, cultural and political changes in Africa, Latin America and Southeast Asia.
