Initial psychiatric assessment of a person typically begins with a case history and mental status examination. Physical examinations and psychological tests are mainly conducted. Neuroimaging and other neurophysiological techniques are generally used. Mental disorder patients are diagnosed in accordance with criteria listed in diagnostic manual like Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders by the American Psychiatric Association and the International Classification of Diseases which is commonly used by the World Health Organization. The fifth edition of the DSM (DSM-5) was started in 2013, and its development was expected to be of significant interest to many medical fields.
