Cytokine storm

Cytokine storm is also known as hypercytokinemia. It is a fatal immune response consisting of a positive feedback loop between cytokines and white blood cells with highly elevated levels of various cytokines. Some of the symptoms of cytokines are high fever, selling and redness, extreme fatigue and nausea. It may be fatal in some cases.

When the infection is in the lungs, this severe inflammation can cause permanent damage. A prolonged cytokine storm will eventually shut down breathing completely. Excessive production of cytokines, perhaps in response to a new and unfamiliar pathogen, can result in what is know as a cytokine storm.
