Abstract

Herbal remedies have emerged as promising adjunctive therapies due to their perceived safety and potential antidiabetic properties. This article explores the use of herbal remedies in diabetes management, focusing on their mechanisms of action, clinical evidence, and safety considerations. Various herbs, such as bitter melon, fenugreek, and cinnamon, have demonstrated hypoglycemic effects through diverse mechanisms, including enhanced insulin sensitivity and inhibition of carbohydrate digestion. Additionally, herbal formulations, such as Ayurvedic and Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) preparations, offer holistic approaches to diabetes care. Despite their potential benefits, herbal remedies pose challenges related to standardization, quality control, and interactions with conventional medications. Clinicians and patients must weigh the risks and benefits carefully when considering herbal supplementation for diabetes control. Future research should focus on rigorous clinical trials to elucidate the efficacy and safety profiles of specific herbal remedies, paving the way for their integration into evidence-based diabetes management protocols.

Effective management of diabetes is crucial to prevent complications such as cardiovascular disease, neuropathy, nephropathy, and retinopathy [1].
While pharmacological interventions, including insulin and oral hypoglycemic agents, form the cornerstone of diabetes treatment, complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) modalities, particularly herbal remedies, have gained popularity among patients seeking natural and holistic approaches to diabetes control. Herbal medicines derived from plant sources offer potential benefits in terms of safety, accessibility, and cultural acceptability [2].
