While traditional treatments often focus on the brain and neurotransmitter regulation, there is increasing evidence that the gut microbiota—a diverse community of microorganisms that inhabit the gastrointestinal system—plays a crucial role in the pathophysiology of these disorders. The gut and brain communicate through a bidirectional pathway known as the gut-brain axis, which facilitates the exchange of signals that can influence emotional regulation, stress response, and cognitive function. Disruptions in this microbiota-brain interaction, referred to as dysbiosis, have been linked to a variety of mental health conditions.
