Polypharmacy, the use of multiple medications by a patient, is common in the management of chronic conditions but poses significant challenges due to the risk of drug interactions. These interactions can alter the effectiveness and safety of medications, leading to adverse effects or therapeutic failures. This article explores the pharmacological management of drug interactions within the context of polypharmacy. It outlines the different types of drug interactions— pharmacokinetic, pharmacodynamic, and pharmaceutical—and discusses strategies for managing these interactions effectively. Key approaches include regular medication review, utilization of drug interaction databases, dose adjustments, selection of alternative medications, continuous monitoring, and patient education.
