China, officially the People's Republic of China (PRC), is the world's most populous state, with a population of over 1.381 billion.[15] The PRC is governed by the Communist Party, with its seat of government in the capital city of Beijing.[16] It exercises jurisdiction over 22 provinces, five autonomous regions, four direct-controlled municipalities (Beijing, Tianjin, Shanghai, and Chongqing), two mostly self-governing special administrative regions (Hong Kong and Macau), and claims sovereignty over the Republic of China (island of Taiwan) off the southeast coast of the mainland.

Modern China is a vast country. It is the world's fourth largest country and is home to approximately 1.25 billion people - nearly a quarter of the world's population. It has a great variety of climates and terrains. The south is wet and tropical, with some rainforest coverage. North-west China is covered in desert. In the very far north-east, close to Russia, the temperature can drop to -50ºC in the winter. In the west of China there are the Himalayas, with some of the highest mountains in the world. China's lowest point is in the Turfan Depression, at -154 metres below sea level. The Turfan Depression is also known as one of the 'furnaces' of China because of its incredible heat.

As China’s sustained economic growth translates into greater assertiveness of its role in the world, this CIGI research theme focuses on China’s agenda in shaping the global economy. Research ranges from China’s own agenda for the G20, the IMF, and monetary and financial matters, to its international trade and investment policies, including those aimed at the internationalization of the renminbi (RMB). The theme engages scholars with a significant ability to connect with China’s leadership and policymakers to ensure that the resulting research embeds a relevant Chinese perspective.

The Chinese are at a different stage of development, so their physics research is more oriented towards commercial application than that in the EU. The current research topics are the Slide-and-exchange mechanism for rapid and selective transport through the nuclear pore complex, Photonic topological insulator with broken time-reversal symmetry etc.
