La Sapienza University

  Sapienza University of Rome was founded in 1303 by Pope Boniface VIII. This is the oldest University in Rome and the largest in Europe. It has contributed to the development of Italian and European science and culture in all areas of knowledge. The main campus, designed by Marcello Piacentini, was opened in 1935. Sapienza offers a vast array of courses including degree programs, PhD courses, one to two year professional courses, and Specialization Schools in many disciplines, run by 63 Departments and 11 Faculties. The PhD programmes are presently over 150 in all fields of knowledge. The first University of Rome has given to the Italian classical tradition in its manifold manifestations the main masters of the twentieth century, such as Giuseppe Ungaretti and is considered a true “school” in the area of archaeological excavations, achieving results of worldwide importance in Libya, Syria, Turkey and in Rome on the Palatin hill. In the field of physics the heritage of the members of the via Panisperna” group – among whom Enrico Fermi, Edoardo Amaldi, Emilio Segrè has been extended to quantum physics, physics of disordered systems, astrophysics. Sapienza enhances research by offering opportunities to its human resources abroad. A special programme for visiting professors, many foreign researchers and teachers periodically come to Sapienza, consolidating over time the quality of its education and research programmes. Sapienza has a wide academic offer including over 300 degree programmes and 250 one or two year professional courses. Within Sapienza there is the Scientific Research Value and Innovation Office aimed at enhancing knowledge and expertise through technology transfer to private industry/enterprises, and fostering a dynamic and valuable exchange between technological research and practical applications.
