La Tonya Noël

La Tonya Noël La Tonya Noël
Associate Professor in the College of Social Work at the Florida State University

Biography

Prof/Dr. Noël received her PhD in Clinical Social Work from the University of Texas, Austin in 2007. Currently, she is working as an Associate Professor in the College of Social Work at the Florida State University. Dr. Noël’s research generally focuses on two primary areas: (1) Understanding cultural, social, and structural influences on detection, treatment engagement, and outcomes for chronic health conditions and depression of minority populations across the lifespan in health care, schools, and rural settings; and (2) Development and evaluation of the effectiveness of psychological interventions to improve detection, treatment engagement and outcomes for depression in populations of color across the lifespan. Specifically, her research is informed and guided by the health equity/disparity and Participatory Action Research (PAR) literature. She utilizes this literature in two ways; first she uses the health equity/disparities literature to design studies that examine cultural, social, and structural influences on health and mental health. Second, in designing these studies she employs PAR methods to identify community needs, community leadership, and to develop community relationships which in turn aids in obtaining community definitions of concerns and build on the community strengths and natural community resources to develop culturally relevant interventions and preventative mechanisms in a collaborative partnership in which each participant serves as equal partners and share decision-making power. This model addresses health inequity through the empowerment, engagement, education, and training of the natural community leaders who then translate these tools and information to others in the community. In these research areas, Dr. Noël has published several articles in reputable journals such as Rehabilitation Psychology, Diabetes Educator, The Gerontologist, and Children & Schools. She is serving as an editorial member also for reputable journals like Research on Social Work Practice and continually serves as an expert Reviewer for journals like Children & Schools, Health and Social Work, Journal of Gerontological Social Work, and Traumatology. Dr. Noël is a member of several professional organizations such as the Council of Social Work Education (CSWE), Gerontology Society of America (GSA), and the Society for Social Work Research (SSWR).
