Biography

Daniel K. Winstead, M.D. was born in Cincinnati, Ohio, in 1944. He was awarded a MD from Vanderbilt University School of Medicine (1970), and completed residency training in adult and child psychiatry at University of Cincinnati! Cincinnati General Hospital. He served at the U.S. Army Hospital in Nuremberg, West Germany from 1973-1976, returning to the States as Chief of Psychiatry at the New Orleans VAMC and as a faculty member at Tulane University School of Medicine. Dr. Winstead served as Associate Chief of Staff for Education at the New Orleans VAMC from 1979-1987 and Director of Psychiatric Education at Tulane from 1983- 1987. He was Acting Chair from 1986-1987 and was named Chair in 1987 of the Tulane Department of Psychiatry and Neurology. He was invested as the Robed G. Heath Professor of Psychiatry at Tulane University School of Medicine in May, 1993, for his demonstrated research competence and leadership ability. He is a fellow in the Academy of Psychosomatic Medicine, the American College of Psychiatrists, and a Distinguished Fellow of the American Psychiatric Association. He is Past President (two separate terms) of the Louisiana Psychiatric Medical Association (LPMA), the Academy of Psychosomatic Medicine, the American Association of Chairs of Departments of Psychiatry, and is former Chair of the ACGME Residency Review Committee for Psychiatry. He is Director Emeritus on the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology and the American Board of Family Medicine. In addition, he is Past-President of the Southern Psychiatric Association and Past President of the American College of Psychiatrists. Dan was recently awarded the 2010 William C. Menninger Award by the American College of Physicians, received a Special Presidential Commendation from the American Psychiatric Association, and was given an Award for Distinguished Public Service by the NY-Presbyterian Hospital and the Departments of Psychiatry at Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons and Weil Cornell Medical College. In addition, he was selected to be the Busharat Ahmad, MD Leadership Development keynote speaker at the 2011 American Medical Association Annual Meeting held in November, 2011.
