Biography

Dr. Kingsley Amoako is a Research Scientist with the Canadian Food Inspection Agency and the Principal Investigator for the Food Defense project at the National Centres for Animal Disease Lethbridge Laboratory on the development of novel technology platforms for the rapid detection and characterization of biothreat agents in food. He holds a Ph.D from the United Graduate School of Yamaguchi University, Japan, currently an Adjunct Professor at the University of Lethbridge (Canada), and was a visiting scientist at the Miyazaki University, Japan. He is a member of the American Society of Microbiology and International Association for Food Protection and an affiliate of the National Centre for Food Protection and Defense, a US Homeland Security Centre of Excellence. Dr. Amoako is a reviewer for several internationally recognized journals. He is an active collaborator providing scientific support for the Department of Foreign Affairs Trade and Development Canada Global Partnership Program funded projects on biological non-proliferation

Research Interest

Dr. Amoako has pioneered work on the development of novel rapid methods for detection and characterization of biothreat agents in food as part of Canada’s foodborne bioterrorism response preparedness. He was the Principal Investigator and successfully led a Defence Research Development Canada, Centre for Security Science project on “Science and technology solutions to mitigate vulnerabilities in Canada’s food supply” as part of Canada’s foodborne bioterrorism response preparedness. This was in collaboration with Health Canada, Public Health Agency Canada, University of Guelph in Canada, Michigan State University in USA, National Centre for Food Protection and Defense, a US Homeland Security Centre of Excellence, and the USDA. Dr. Amoako is involved in a number of projects on Genomics Research and Development Initiatives in Canada on the application of genomics tools for microbial food and water safety. His other research interest is on the development of methods for the decontamination of anthrax spores.
