Biography

Dr. Michael R. Holbrook after completing his PhD in Molecular and Cellular Biology at the University of Massachusetts, He moved to Dr. Alan Barrett’s laboratory at the University of Texas Medical Branch (UTMB). At UTMB my work had several foci that included from virus sequencing, development of antiviral, structural virology and viral pathogenesis. Following post-doctoral training, He moved to a faculty position at the University of New Mexico but was recruited back to UTMB to become director of the new BSL-4 facilities. In addition to faculty responsibilities, He also took on the role of Director of Emerging and High Risk Pathogens Core in the Galveston National Laboratory which included the new BSL-4 facilities. At UTMB I developed projects studying tick-borne flaviviruses, yellow fever virus, Rift Valley fever virus, Nipah virus and Ebola virus. These projects included structural studies, drug development and evaluating mechanisms of viral pathogenesis with a focus on innate immunity. In 2009 I moved to a position at the NIAID Integrated Research Facility in Frederick, MD to build a new research program that uses medical imaging as a tool evaluating viral pathogenesis.
