Dr. khan did B.S. (Chem. Hons.) in 1979 and M.S. (Biochem.) in 1981 from Aligarh Muslim University, India. He received my Ph.D. from Banaras Hindu University, India in 1989 and studied the molecular biology of host-pathogen interactions using Salmonella typhimurium LT2 as a host and P22 and MB78 as bacteriophages. This was followed by a postdoctoral training in the Department of Biochemistry at the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio where he worked on the DNA packaging and capsid assembly of bacteriophage T7. He joined the Division of Microbiology at the National Center for Toxicological Research (NCTR) in 1997 and am working as a Research Microbiologist. His research program focuses on several key areas that include development of rapid, simple and sensitive methods for the detection of drug-resistant molecular markers, and the isolation, characterization, genetic analysis of food-borne pathogens using molecular biology tools, food biosecurity, and development of risk assessment models for human populations due to the contamination of different food matrices with bioterror agents.
Characterization of multidrug-resistant bacteria from different food sources.
Improvement of detection methods for the antimicrobial resistance genes, plasmid profiling, mechanism of resistance, gene expression profiling.
Identification of anthrax disease biomarkers, and elucidation of inflammatory, apoptotic. Signal transduction pathways in human cutaneous, gastrointestinal, and pulmonary epithelial cells in early stage of infection with B. anthracis Stern spores.
