Biography

Henk A. Tennekes graduated with an M.Sc. degree in Human Nutrition from the Agricultural University of Wageningen, The Netherlands, in 1974 and performed his Ph.D. work on the carcinogenicity of the insecticide dieldrin at Shell Research Ltd in Sittingbourne in the UK. He was involved in general research on tumour-promoting agents at the Institute of Pharmacology and Toxicology of the University of Marburg from 1978 to 1980, and the German Cancer Research Centre in Heidelberg from 1980-1985 (and mentored by renowned cancer researcher Hermann Druckrey). After a brief spell as senior toxicologist at Sandoz in Basle (1985-1986), he became Chief Toxicologist at RCC Research and Consulting Company AG, a contract research organisation (CRO) in Itingen, Switzerland in 1986, and made significant contributions to the meteoric rise of the company to one of Europe’s leading CROs. In 1992, Dr. Tennekes established an independent consultancy for product safety assessment, ETS Experimental Toxicology Services BV, which has served leading companies in the chemical industry over the past 25 years, with an excellent record of achievement. His consultancy is based in Zutphen, the Netherlands, since 2002.

Dr. Tennekes was Secretary of the Toxicology Section of the Swiss Society of Pharmacology and Toxicology from 1992-1998 and a Member of the Board of Directors of the Swiss Register of Toxicologists from 1996-2000. He is an Overseas Fellow of the Royal Society of Medicine since 2017. Henk Tennekes has authored many important papers on chemical risk assessment, and he was one of the first scientists to recognize the environmental hazards of neonicotinoid insecticides.His groundbreaking work with these pesticides played an important role in bringing about bans on neonicotinoids in Europe.
