Dr Kagawa obtained PhD with study of cytochrome P450s working with Dr Ryo Sato Osaka University who discovered P450 He moved to University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center at Dallas and studied the cAMPdependent gene regulation of steroidogenic P450s with Dr Michael R Waterman He moved to Vanderbilt University Nashville TN in 1992 At Vanderbilt University he purified a few 61549;g of transcription factors and succeeded to identify them Pbx1 and 3 that are involved in the cAMPdependent gene expression of steroidogenic P450s and also essential for adrenal formation during the gestation He was also interested in the heterologous expression of mammalian P450s in E coli and established methods for the efficient expression and purification of hydrophobic P450s including aromatase CYP19 Because large amounts of highly purified P450s became available he is interested in studying detailed reaction mechanisms of P450s based on the 3D structure
Physiological role of P450s, drug metabolism, biosynthesis of steroid hormones, environmental hormones, reaction mechanisms of P450s, structure-function relationship of P450, role and regulation of aromatase, heterologous expression of hydrophobic membrane proteins in E. coli.
