Forensic Mental Illness

Forensic mental health services provide assessment and treatment of people with a mental disorder and a history of criminal offending, or those who are at risk of offending.

Forensic mental health defined more broadly is an area of specialisation that, in the criminal sphere, involves the assessment and treatment of those who are both mentally disordered and whose behaviour has led, or could lead, to offending. In the civil sphere forensic mental health has a more complex remit, not only being involved in the assessment and treatment of those who have potentially compensatable injuries but also providing advice to courts and tribunals on competency and capacity

Forensic Nursing Science

The science of forensic nursing represents an emerging world view in the future of the forensic sciences as crime and violence bring together the two most powerful systems affecting the lives of people throughout the world – health and justice.

The enigma of defining nursing science is preceded by defining nursing, science, research, and nursing theory-guided practice. The context for exploring the meaning of nursing science is provided through examination of the totality and simultaneity paradigms. Differing views of nursing as a discipline are discussed.

Post Exposure Prophylaxis

Post-exposure prophylaxis or Post-exposure prevention (PEP) is any preventive medical treatment started immediately after exposure to a pathogen (such as a disease-causing virus), in order to prevent infection by the pathogen and the development of disease.

Post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP) guidelines lack a substantive evidence base to guide advice. It is extremely unlikely that this will change, as randomised studies of different drug regimens for PEP are not feasible owing to the complexity of exposure, low event rate, and inability to ethically have a placebo group. Evolving basic science understanding, along with further studies on animals and prevention of mother-to-child transmission (PMTCT) findings, will continue to guide policy makers.
