Russia its widely known as the Russian Federation, which consists of 83 federal subjects, among them there are 2 cities of federal importance - Moscow, the capital of Russia with a population of more than 11 million inhabitants, and St. Petersburg, the second largest city in Russia also called "the northern capital" with its population of around 5 million people. It is the world's ninth most populous country covering about 144 million people as per the census of 2015.
Geography of the Country:
Area wise it is the largest country in the world covering about 17,075,400 square kilometers. It has a wide natural resource base, including major deposits of timber, petroleum, natural gas, coal, ores and other mineral resources.
Economy of the Country:
The Russian economy rank stands at the tenth position by nominal GDP and sixth by purchasing power parity in 2015. It is a great power and a permanent member of the United Nations Security Council, a member of the G20, the Council of Europe, the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC), the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO), the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE), and the World Trade Organization (WTO), as well as being the leading member of the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS), the Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO) and one of the 5 members of the Eurasian Economic Union (EEU), along with Armenia, Belarus, Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan.

In the 19th and 20th centuries the country produced a large number of notable scientists, making important contributions into physics, astronomy, neurology, mathematics, computing, chemistry, biology, etc.. Russian inventors and engineers excelled in such areas as electrical engineering, shipbuilding, , weaponry, communications, IT, nuclear technology and .
