Brazil (Portuguese: Brasil) is the largest country in South America and fifth largest in the world. Famous for its football (soccer) tradition and its annual Carnaval in Rio de Janeiro, Salvador, Recife and Olinda. It is a country of great diversity, from the bustling urban mosaic of São Paulo to the infinite cultural energy of Pernambuco and Bahia, the wilderness of the Amazon rainforest and world-class landmarks such as the Iguaçu Falls, there is plenty to see and to do in Brazil.

Brazil’s geography is a fascinating one. As the home of the acclaimed Amazon Rainforest, as well as the Brazilian Highlands and vast stretches of coastline, this South American country continues to impress visitors in its natural splendour and complexity. Brazil has a total surface area of 8,514,877 square kilometres (3,287,612 square miles) of which 8,459,417 square kilometres (3,266,199 square miles) is land and 55 460 square kilometres (or 21,410 square miles) is water.

According to the World Economic Forum, Brazil was the top country in upward evolution of competitiveness in 2009, gaining eight positions among other countries, overcoming Russia for the first time, and partially closing the competitiveness gap with India and China among the BRIC economies. In 2012 Forbes ranked Brazil as having the 5th largest number of billionaires in the world, a number much larger than what is found in other Latin American countries, and even ahead of United Kingdom and Japan. Brazil is a member of diverse economic organizations, such as Mercosur, Unasul, G8+5, G20, WTO, and the Cairns Group.

Orthopedics research in Brazil is done in different ways and INTO is a branch of the Ministry of Health direct administration, linked to the Department of Health Care (SAS/MS) and is a public hospital in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, specialized in high complexity surgical care in both traumatology and orthopedics that exclusively cares for patients from the public health system. The rate of high complexity surgeries is 34.2%. It does not provide first-aid services. The Institute receives patients from public health units from all over the country. The Journey Continues with the support of the Brazilian Orthopedics and Traumatology Society (SBOT), the Brazilian Knee Society (SBCJ), the Brazilian Hip Society (SBQ), the Brazilian Association for the Study of Infections and Osteoarticular Implants (AsBIO) and the Latin American Society of Orthopaedics and Traumatology (SLAOT).
