Hollow fiber mediated liquid phase microextraction (HF-LPME) has demonstrated great potential in broad application
areas such as pharmaceuticals, food and environmental industry. Specifically, its unique advantages of small sample
requirements and relative easiness of operation enable it to be widely accepted by analytical chemists. Several new technologies
based on this new technique for pharmaceutical applications including physical characterization, protein binding and
quantitation are being developed. Due to its miniaturized structure, it is suitable for characterizing a large number of
compounds by measuring their physical properties, such as log D and permeability. It is also shown that HF-LPME can be used
for determining protein binding. Further, this technology has been applied to the determination of various pharmaceutical
compounds in various complex matrixes including herb medicine and plasma. With the recent development in new HF-LPME
device, it is feasible to conduct the aforementioned assays in high throughput format.
