Abstract
Weak intermolecular forces like hydrogen bond and charge-charge interaction are nourished by Nature in various biomolecular events of life processes and are decisive factors for ligand-receptor interactions 1 that form the concept of drug design. 2 Supramolecular structures, arising out of non-covalent interactions of small molecules, as discrete reactive intermediates have recently been invoked as eff ective catalytic species for various organic reactions. 3 Th e identifi cation and characterization of supramolecular assemblies of small molecules is most essential in devising catalytic processes and have been recently achieved through various mass spectrometric techniques. 4 However, the identifi cation of supramolecular catalytic species representing a metal organic framework (MOF) remains unexplored. Th e dual activation catalysis by alkali metal salts have been exploited in various organic reactions. 5 Th e present work will highlight the origin of the catalytic role of alkali metal salts through mass spectroscopic intervention of the non-covalently formed MOFs.
