Every year a number of students drop out from education system due to factors other than social and economic. This
unchecked, less researched factor is lack of resilience! Even in local context situation is more worst then dropping out;
there are numerous news during result months (normally April, August and September) that a noticeable number of students
attempt suicide because of not getting required grades or admission in required colleges. What is so strong that motivate
these youngsters to take their lives or destroy them??? What is lacking that cannot stop them doing so and turn disaster into
victory. Its lack of ability to deal with difficult situations, to cope with trauma to overcome stress and to re-build oneself with
broken pieces; in other words its resilience. Most probable is the case that these youngsters are not taught how to cope up with
adversity at home as well as in schools. This study is two dimensional; in one way it will try to explore strategies adopted by
teachers to enable their students to be more resilient. While on the other way it will propose few activities that can be helpful
for developing resilience among students. Population of the study includes teachers of secondary and higher secondary schools
and students of final years (i.e., 10th and 12th grade students). These two stages are selected because mostly students who try
to escape from reality belong to these two groups i.e., either after failure in grade 10 most of them attempt suicide or leave
home or after result of grade 12 they do same. Sample of the study will be selected from three towns of a metropolitan city of
Pakistan through random sampling at first stage. After this, six higher secondary schools, two from each town (male-1 and
female-1) will be selected. At third stage the sample will bifurcate dividing into teachers and students. All the teachers teaching
who are teaching to these classes will be taken as part of the study while a cluster sampling technique will be used to collect
data from student respondents. So approximate sample of the study for teachers will be 100 will for students it will be 300
respondents. Instrument of the study will be self-developed survey questionnaire for students and an interview schedule for
teachers. Both of these instruments will be pilot tested first in order to establish reliability. Descriptive analysis will be carried
out for data analysis of responses from students, while thematic analysis will be carried out for interviews from teachers. To
achieve second objective of the study, few activities will also be suggested for development of resilience in students in light of
recommendations of respondents.
