Biography

After graduating from the Shandong University of Traditional Chinese Medicine with MB and BCh in 1993, Dr Ye started his clinical training and work at the Department of Surgery in the University Hospital, Jinan, China. He had been a surgeon and clinical teacher before he moved to Cardiff to pursue a PhD in cancer biology in 2004. Following his PhD study of bone morphogenetic proteins (BMP) and their signalling in prostate cancer, Dr Ye continues to explore the mechanism(s) of bone metastasis from prostate cancer and breast cancer, seeking and developing therapeutic approaches particularly by targeting BMPs signalling.

Research Interest

Metastatic bone lesions frequently occur with certain solid tumours, and are the main type of metastasis of breast cancer, prostate cancer and lung cancer, 3 of the leading types of cancer. Due to the profound effects of bone morphogenetic proteins on bone formation and turnover, their involvement bone metastasis has attracted wide attention in the past decade. Bone morphogenetic proteins (BMPs) are members of the transforming growth factor-beta (TGF-β) superfamily first named by Urist (1965). BMP proteins were first purified and cloned by Wozney et al. (1988), Celeste et al. (1990), Lee (1990) and Ozkaynak et al. (1990), amongst others.
