Nino Muradashivili
Assistant Professor
Department of Physiology
University of Louisville
USA
I graduated from the Tbilisi State Medical University in 2002 (my Diploma corresponds to MD in USA). In 2009 I finished Clinical Residency in Critical
Care Medicine at the Central Hospital, Tbilisi State Medical University, Critical Care Medicine Institute, Cardiology Clinic “open Heart” (Tbilisi, Georgia).
I joined the University of Louisville, Department of Physiology, in November 2009 as a Postdoctoral Fellow. I studied mechanisms of microvascular responses during various inflammatory pathologies such as hypertension, stroke, and others that are associated with enhanced blood content of fibrinogen (Fg) and homocysteine (Hcy).
My research was mainly focused on various effects of Fg in cerebral vasculature. I learned and established in the Lab a very reliable model for observation of mouse pial circulation with opened cranial window. I was also involved in development of a novel dual-tracer probing method that allows defining transcellular from paracellular transport during various pathologies. I have lately developed a mouse model of mild TBI. This is a new model at the University of Louisville. Using unique methods of labeling of brain microvessels I have obtained new data addressing mechanisms of Fg-induced cerebrovascular remodeling after TBI. Results of our experiments were presented at various American Heart/American Stroke Associations’ (AHA/ASA), the Federation of American Societies for Experimental Biology (FASEB), and National and International Neurotrauma meetings (NNS; INTS). I have published ten peer-reviewed and three invited papers. I have multiple awards including Research Recognition Award from American Physiological Society, Central Nervous System section and Atherosclerosis, Thrombosis, and Vascular Biology Travel Award for Young Investigators from AHA/ASA.
In August 2015 I have been promoted to Assistant Professor position and joined faculty of Department of Physiology at University of Louisville. Based on my work I recently submitted grant application to the National Institute of Health (NIH). I am actively involved in training of graduated and undergraduate students and postdoctoral fellows. I also serve as a reviewer for manuscripts in different journals and as a judge for abstracts and posters for scientific meetings.
My research is focused on mechanisms of changes in vasculo-neuronal unit and the resultant neurodegeneration during cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases such as hypertension, diabetes, stroke, Alzheimer’s disease and traumatic brain injury
