Biography

He is a Research Plant Physiologist at USDA-ARS at Stoneville, MS, USA, with Crop Genetics Research Unit. He received his PhD in Plant Nutrition from the Department of Pure and Applied Biology, University of Leeds, UK in 1989. He joined USDA-ARS in 2004 as a Research Plant Physiologist working on identifying the physiological and genetic mechanisms controlling soybean seed composition and mineral nutrition constituents (protein, oil, fatty acids, sugars, phytohormones, and mineral nutrition) under drought, heat, and disease pressure. Dr. Bellaloui, with his collaborators, demonstrated for the first time that the micronutrient boron is mobile in transgenic crops containing the sugar alcohol sorbitol; significantly advanced the current knowledge of the relationship between glyphosate application and nitrogen and iron metabolism in glyphosate-resistant and glyphosate-susceptible soybean; quantified for the first time the effect of maturity genes, genetic background, temperature, and their interactions on soybean seed protein, oil, sugars, and mineral nutrition; and identified new QTLs related to seed protein, oil, fatty acids, isoflavones, and minerals in soybean. Dr. Bellaloui is internationally recognized in the area of plant nutrition. Dr. Bellaloui has authored and co-authored many peer-reviewed articles and invited book-chapters. To enhance students’ learning and research, in 2008 Dr. Bellaloui launched a project on soybean seed nutrition in the Department of Natural Sciences and Environmental Health, Mississippi Valley State University that involved both faculty and students.

Research Interest

His research interest includes physiology, genetics, and environment effects on seed/grain nutrition and seed/grain nutritional qualities, etc.
