6MWT in Bariatric Surgery Patients: A Systematic Review

Abstract
Obesity has become a major public health concern during the last decades. Obese patients might require surgery in order to treat obesity. A systematic review in PubMed and Google Scholar was conducted with the terms “Six Minute Walk Test”, “6MWT” and “obesity”. 20 articles were analyzed. Six Minute Walk Test (6MWT) is a submaximal exercise evaluation that has been proposed as a part of an integral preoperative screening in bariatric patients. It has been described that most of the patients tend to improve their 6MWT results after bariatric surgery, which correlates with functional capacity and weight loss. 6MWT is an alternative for measuring functional capacity when CPET is not available.
