Obesity, once considered a condition of excess adiposity, is now perceived as a multifaceted syndrome with far-reaching implications. Obesity is no longer just about excess weight; it's a complex syndrome influenced by genes, environment, and behavior. Adipose tissue, once viewed solely as a fat store, is now recognized as an endocrine organ releasing hormones affecting metabolism and immune responses. Metabolism, once simplified as calories in versus calories out, is now explored through the lens of gut microbiota and metabolomics. Our microbiome's impact on metabolism is increasingly understood, opening new avenues for intervention and treatment. The immune system, traditionally known for fighting infections, has a broader role. It influences metabolism and plays a key part in obesity-related inflammation. These novel perspectives offer hope for innovative therapies and a holistic understanding of these interconnected systems, potentially transforming how we approach obesity and related health conditions.
