Functional Gastrointestinal Disorders

Functional gastrointestinal disorders (FGID), also known as disorders of gut-brain interaction, include a number of separate idiopathic disorders which affect different parts of the gastrointestinal tract and involve visceral hypersensitivity and motility disturbances.

Common digestive system disorders include as follows:

  • Abdominal discomfort (bloating, pain or cramps)
  • Unintentional weight loss
  • Vomiting and nausea
  • Acid reflux (heartburn)
  • Diarrhea or Constipation (or sometimes both)
  • Fecal incontinence
  • Fatigue
  • Loss of appetite
  • Difficulty in swallowing, etc.

Few of the diagnostic methods of Digestive Disorder include Fecal occult blood or Fecal Immunochemical Test, Stool culture, Other stool tests and Breathe tests, etc. Functional Gastrointestinal Disorders (FGID) can be treated by the following ways.

Nutritional counselling: A registered dietician will work with you to create a diet containing foods that may help you feel better and let you know about any foods you should avoid.

Medications: Some functional GI problems can be treated with medications that reduce acid production, ease intestinal spasms, regulate the motility of the digestive tract or treat pain at the nerve level.

Stress management: Stress worsens many digestive symptoms.
