Biography

Dr. David S. Lopez is a cancer epidemiologist, who graduated in 2007 with a Dr.PH. in epidemiology and disease control from the UT-School of Public Health (UTSPH). David competed and was selected for the R25T National Cancer Institute (NCI) pre-doctoral fellowship at M.D. Anderson Cancer Center Department of Epidemiology. His thesis was to assess the role of the metabolic syndrome in prostate cancer among Mexican-Americans using a population-based case-control design. Subsequently, he pursued a NCI-T32 postdoctoral fellowship at Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health Department of Epidemiology. David has developed a keen interest and rich understanding about the role of obesity on prostate cancer (grade and stage) and the hypothesized pathway mechanisms, sex steroid hormones, insulin and inflammation. David is currently an Assistant Professor of Epidemiology at the UTSPH. He has taught the following courses, “Use of Race and Ethnicity in Epidemiological Research,” and “Epidemiology I (core course).”

Research Interest

• Understand the pathways that contribute to cancer-related racial/ethnic and health disparities.
• Investigate the interplay between obesity, diabetes and metabolic syndrome and prostate cancer incidence and progression.
• Study the association of circulating markers of androgenecity and inflammation with stage and grade of prostate cancer.
• Study the role of racial/ethnic variation in sex steroid hormones in the etiology of prostate cancer and benign prostatic hyperplasia.
