Biography
Dr. Smith is Professor of Epidemiology Public Health University of Maryland School of Medicine and core faculty National Study Center for Trauma EMS. His medical degree MBChB is from Otago University and MPH from the Harvard School of Public Health. As an internationally renowned scientist he has received widespread recognition for his methodological expertise in injury research especially in development of injury surveillance systems alcohol and injuries use of databases for injury research and occupational injuries and has published more than 152 peer reviewed articles and a book Injury Prevention: An International Perspective. He has a long history of funded research including from NIH CDC and the Department of Defense. He currently has two NIH funded studies on Alcohol Involvement in a Cohort of Trauma Patients and Hangovers and Traffic Injuries. In 2010 he received the Excellence in Science Award for injury research from the American Public Health Association.
