Biography

Profile Keertan Dheda is Professor of Respiratory Medicine and Director of the Lung Infection and Immunity Unit (see website at https://www.lunginstitute.co.za/content/lung_infection.html) within the Division of Pulmonology, Department of Medicine, at the University of Cape Town. He is the recipient of several prestigious awards including the 2010 International Union Against Tuberculosis and Lung Disease Scientific Award, and holds several multi-national grants. His main research interests are the study of the immunopathogenesis, epidemiology and diagnosis of tuberculosis, including drug-resistant TB. He is the co-author of ~110 peer-reviewed publications, holds patents related to TB diagnostics, and he serves on the editorial boards of several peer-reviewed international journals. He serves as the co-chair of the LTBI sub-group of the STOP TB Partnership.

Research Interest

Clinical aspects of MDR & XDR-TB.

The development and validation of field-friendly TB diagnostics.

Immunopathogenesis of TB and other human pulmonary infections.

Interventional pulmonology, pulmonary fibrosis, airway diseases including asthma and COPD.
