Biography
Dr. McDonnell is a Neurological Physiotherapist and a Research Training Fellow investigating whether exercise can change the brain in healthy adults and individuals following stroke. As a clinician Dr McDonnell was interested in the potential for reorganisation within the damaged brain following stroke which led her to complete a PhD in 2006 investigating the potential for inducing neuroplasticity in the motor cortex following stroke by combining task-specific training with sensory stimulation. Her current research is looking at the benefits of aerobic exercise following stroke, to see whether it can improve cognition, physical functioning, quality of life and promote neuroplasticity.
