Biography

Dr. Sheryl is a world leader in the design, development and assessment of video games for rehabilitation. In 2008, Sheryl founded a video game company, Blue Marble Game Co. Dr. Flynn and her team Blue Marble Game Company are currently designing, developing and testing video games for rehabilitation. She works closely with game developers to create user-centered, unique games that match her clients’ impairments. Recently Dr. Flynn received funding from the Department of Defense to develop a video game for service members with mild traumatic brain injuries. She has also received funding to collaborate with a very large game company to design the world’s first video game for rehabilitation that will be deployed in homes and hospitals worldwide. Most recently, Dr. Flynn began collaborating with Microsoft to explore the use of the Microsoft Surface Welcome to Surface technology for use in a rehabilitation setting. Dr. Flynn received a degree in Physical Therapy from New York University in 1991, a Ph.D in Motor Control and Learning from the University of Florida in 2001, and completed a 3-year post doctoral fellowship in Neuroscience at the McKnight Brain Institute at the University of Florida in 2005. During that time, she, along with her world renown advisor Paul Reier PhD explored the use of enriched environments combined with transplanted embryonic cells to promote recovery of function in spinal cord injured rats. In 2007, Sheryl moved to Los Angeles to explore the use of virtual reality and video games in rehabilitation and collaborated with another world-renown researcher, Albert "Skip" Rizzo PhD. She currently contracts with the Institute for Creative Technologies at the University of Southern California where she, along with Belinda Lange, Physio PhD. are exploring the use of Virtual Reality gaming technology to provide intense, yet personalized, physical rehabilitation to individuals who have sustained catastrophic nervous system injuries and amputations. This work is RERC funded by NIDRR OPTT-RERC. Dr. Flynn also holds a Research Assistant Professor position in the Leonard Davis School of Gerontology at the University of Southern California USC Davis School of Gerontology. Dr. Flynn began working at Pr Rehabilitation ecision part time in 2007.
