Biography
Dr. Abd Elmageed did his postdoctoral training in cell and molecular biology of cancer disease at three major medical schools: Louisiana State University, Johns Hopkins University, and Tulane University. At each institution, he sought to improve his research and pursued cutting-edge research in basic and translational biomedical sciences. In 2012, he was appointed as a Research Instructor of Urology for his groundbreaking work in reprograming of stem cells by prostate cancer cells. In 2015, he has promoted to an Assistant Professor in the Department of Surgery at Tulane.
Research Interest
Our research focus is to unravel the molecular mechanisms underlying the regulatory role of exosomes-associated microRNAs in tumor progression of prostate cancer using tissue culture approach, animal model and human specimens. Prostate cancer comes second after lung cancer in men. Despite many genetic and epigenetic modifications are known, discovering new cellular mechanisms contributing to the disease progression will bring new “HOPE” for cancer patients. Also, how melanoma cells acquire drug resistance in patients harboring BRAF-V600E mutation is another area of interest. We consider engaging students and residents in research and establishing collaborations with other scientists and physicians are very important steps for building a strong research program in our department.
