Dr. Reyes is an internationally renowned surgeon-scientist. He perfected the technique of small bowel transplantation and has the largest pediatric series in the world with this procedure. An extraordinary liver surgeon, he advanced many aspects of the technique of liver-related transplantation. His surgical skills, love of teaching, and compassionate demeanor make him a tremendous asset to the University.
Dr. Reyes was born in Ecuador in 1954 and received his medical school training in Brazil. He successfully completed a research fellowship and full residency in general surgery at New York Medical College Lincoln Hospital. He was recruited in 1988 to the University of Pittsburgh where he completed a fellowship in solid organ transplantation and served under Dr. Thomas Starzl, considered one of the fathers of transplantation.
Dr. Reyes joined the University Of Washington, Department Of Surgery in July of 2004 as the Chief of the Division of Transplant Surgery at UWMC and the Chief of Pediatric Transplantation at Seattle Children’s Hospital. He has held key positions for the United Network for Organ Sharing (UNOS), including as a member of its national Board of Directors, as well as serving numerous other transplant organizations, has published over 200 articles and 30 books and book chapters, and speaks nationally and internationally on transplant issues.
