Abstract

The beginning of green chemistry is frequently considered as a response to the need to reduce the damage of the environment by man-made materials and the processes used to produce them. Also, green chemistry is contributed to a more sustainable growth of industry with a more green economy and environment. Green chemistry has wide applications in production of antibiotics, surfactants, biodegradable polymers and energy saving in pharmaceutical industries. A good practice is the synthesis of the famous example Ibuprofen�® through green chemistry instead of brown chemistry. Indeed, the most simple and direct way to apply green chemistry in pharmaceutical products is to utilize eco-friendly, non-hazardous, reproducible and efficient solvents and catalysts in synthesis of drug molecules, drug intermediates and in researches involving synthetic chemistry. Microwave synthesis is also an important tool of green chemistry by being an energy efficient process. Accordingly, the need of green chemistry in pharmacy education has introduced to help monitor, understand and limit the changes to our world due to the varying levels of chemicals in pharmaceutical industry. The biggest challenge of green chemistry in pharmacy education is to use its rules in practice. Currently, our interest is focused in adopting green chemistry principles as a recent trend in pharmaceutical teaching and learning methods as well as research plan to afford pharmaceutical products. Our vision is that the philosophy and practice of green chemistry to be spread as a part of pharmacy ethics to balance eco-development profitable for society and a healthy environment.

Biography

Salwa Elmeligie has completed her PhD from Cairo University and Postdoctoral studies from Faculty of Pharmacy, Iowa University, USA. She is Head of Pharmaceutical Organic Chemistry Department, Faculty of Pharmacy, Cairo University. She is also Reviewer for Higher Education Institutions (HEIs), conducted by the National Authority of Quality Assurance and Accreditation of Education (NAQAAE), and Credited Trainer in Egypt. She has published more than 36 papers in reputed journals and has been serving as an Editorial Board Member of repute in addition to attending more than 20 training courses in Quality Assurance systems.
