Abstract
Nosocomial infections otherwise known as healthcare acquired infections are a major cause of mortality and morbidity, especially in the hospital setting because of the patient acuity. NS / HAI drive up medical costs, length of stay and reduce patient satisfaction. Since there are finite resources available first we must assess the risk to patients of various HAI and prioritize our plan. There are criteria that are used to identify NS/ HAI based on national/international guidelines. These are different from clinical identification. One of the types of HAI to be monitored are selected, a surveillance program must be established with resources identified. Once data has been collected, the next step is to analyze the information to identify patterns and trends. This is a significant step that must not be overlooked so that problems with non-compliance with best practices to reduce NS/ HAI can be identified. Next an education/remediation plan needs to be carried out. To sustain the gain of lower / elimination of HAI, there needs to be an ongoing surveillance process improvement program.
