Biography

Dr. Janet Neisewander has received her PhD in Psychology at the University of Kentucky in 1988 and received post-doctoral training in Pharmacology and Psychiatry at the University for Pennsylvania during the period of 1988-1991. Currently, she is working as a Professor in the School of Life Sciences at Arizona State University. She has successfully completed administrative responsibilities as the founding Director of the Behavioral Neuroscience Program in Psychology at Arizona State University (2002-2006) and she has served on numerous grant review panels for NIH. She currently serves on the Program Committee for the College on Problems of Drug Dependence. She is serving as an editorial member of several reputed journals like Psychopharmacology and the International Journal of Neuropsychopharmacology. She has authored over 90 research articles and book chapters. She is a member of the American College of Neuropsychopharmacology, the College on Problems of Drug Dependence, the Society for Neuroscience, Women in Neuroscience, the International Behavioral Neuroscience Society, and the Behavioral Pharmacological Society.

Research Interest

Dr. Neisewander’s research investigates the neural mechanisms that are involved in drug dependence. Her particular interests include the neuroanatomical and neurotransmitter systems involved in modulating cocaine and nicotine self-administration and motivation for drug, including molecular changes that occur within the systems and how these changes can be countered using behavioral, pharmacological, and genetic approaches.  She is also interested in the influence of drug-conditioned effects and social factors on drug reward and dependence.
