Dr. Gray is Director of the BioMusic Program at the University of North Carolina-Greensboro, and founder and former Director of the BioMusic Program, a program of National Musical Arts, the resident ensemble at the National Academy of Sciences, Washington D.C. Since 1986, through her leadership, the BioMusic Program has pioneered new interdisciplinary scientific research and methods that explore music, and musical processes and outcomes in all species. Her current field research includes bonobo apes, whales, and marine animals at the Meso-American reef. She has led the development of a touring BioMusic science exhibition and a BioMusic curriculum for elementary grades, both funded by the National Science Foundation. As professional musician, she has performed at The White House and is the recipient of the prestigious Franz Liszt Award from the government of Hungary. She has also produced international concerts for the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts and the Getty Center in Los Angeles.
