Cyclamen
genus (
primulaceae
) is represented by 22 species distributed in parts of Europe, Western Asia and part of North
Africa. Many species of this genus are used in traditional and folk medicine as antifungal and antiwarts; also they are used
for the treatment of rheumatism, migraines and various skin diseases.
In the present study we investigate the antioxidant and antimicrobial activities of
Cyclamen africanum
Boiss & Reut
(endemic species to the North Africa) extracts using DPPH and disc diffusion method, respectively.
The obtained results showed that the dichloromethane, methanol and methanol-water extracts exert a low antioxidant
activity; while the methanol extract shows the best antioxidant potential, with 70.44% radical scavenging activity. Meanwhile
we observed that there is no significant antimicrobial activity for all extracts tested.
