Biography

Dhiren Nehra is a Consultant Upper GI Surgeon in UK since 1999 with specialist interest in Laparoscopic and Gastrointestinal Surgery. He graduated in 1983 from Lokmanya Tilak Sion Medical College affiliated to University of Bombay with MS in General Surgery and underwent Higher Training in Wales with specialisation in Upper GI surgery. His NHS hospital base is Epsom & St. Helier University Hospitals and conducts his private practice at St Anthony’s Hospital and Ashtead Hospital in Surrey UK. He trained in Upper GI Surgery and has published widely on diseases of the oesophagus, stomach and the biliary system including a Masters thesis on Bile Reflux in Barrett’s Oesophagus. He was a research fellow at the University Hospital California, Los Angeles where he spent a year training in the Foregut Unit with Dr. Tom DeMeester and had an attachment at the Gastric Cancer Unit at the National Cancer Centre in Tokyo. His expertise includes surgical management of oesophagogastric cancers, pancreatic, biliary and gastro-oesphageal reflux disease. He is involved in teaching medical students and training of resident surgeons and holds the post of Surgical Tutor in the London Deanery School of Surgery.
 

Research Interest

Dhiren Nehra research interests include gastro-oesophageal reflux disease, studying the role of acid and bile reflux in the aetiology of Barretts Oesophagus. He has performed oesophageal aspiration studies in patients with reflux disease and measured bile acid profiles using HPLC. This pioneer work has been widely published. Currently, he is working in conjunction with University of Cranfield University UK, Dept. of Bioorganic and Polymer Chemistry, in development of a bile acid biosensor probe.
