Abstract
S ocial media sites have become an established means of communication because of its exponential growth in number of users across the world, and its encouragement of interaction between users through site features. More than 80% of U.S. adults use social media accounts monthly and 90% of U.S. college students use a Facebook account. Over the last three years, social media has moved from an uncertain strategy, to a permanent fixture, onto a primary tool for peoples interactions. Dental educators seem interested in using social media for educational purposes, but do not always know how to incorporate social media into their courses. Combined with traditional instruction, social media can increase student interaction in class through group discussions, document sharing, question and answers during class, and office hours. Specific social media tools will be addressed, with suggestions on how it can be utilized in a professional and educational way. Social media platforms that will be discussed are Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, Google+ and LinkedIn. A tutorial will be provided on each application discussed. Session learning objectives: 1. Participants will learn why using social media is important in education. 2. Participants will learn different social media applications, to choose what works best for class. 3. Participants will learn how to maximize their social media experience. 4. Participants will learn applications to efficiently and effectively use social media
