Chromium in the effluent is a major concern for tanning industry. Chemical precipitation methods are commonly employed
for the removal of chromium (vi) but this leads to formation of Chrome-bearing solid waste, plus it is uneconomical when
the concentration of chromium in the effluent is low Ion exchange and membrane separation methods are relatively expensive. In
the present study, the absorption of a low-cost biomass from marine algae
Padina
sp., is investigated. The experiment is carried
out to investigate the effect of the significant process. Parameters such as initial pH and the end Chromium concentration are
conducted to determine the absorption capacity of the biomass. At the pH of 2 the maximum removal capacity is 0.3mmol/g.
A feasible solution is proposed, for disposal of the contaminant (acid and base solutions) containing high concentration of
Chromium (vi) obtained during the study.
