Abstract

Objective: To assess the safety, feasibility, and the oncologic outcome of laparoscopic resection of gastric stromal tumors (GISTs) by comparing it with open resection. Methods: From January 2008 to December 2010, a retrospective comparative study was performed comparing 75 primary gastric GISTs in our department. Laparoscopic (LAP) resections were performed in 37 patients and traditional (OPEN) resections in 38 patients. Clinical and pathologic characteristics, short-term and long-term outcomes were analyzed according to surgical procedure. Result: Patients who underwent LAP or OPEN resection of gastric GISTs did not differ with respect to age at operation, gender, risk, size, BMI, tumor location. The operative time, blood loss, period to flatus, time to oral intake, postoperative hospital stay in LAP group was less than those of the Open group. The Clavien-Dindo Grade of operative complications between the two groups are similar (P=0.449). There was no statistically significant difference between the two groups in Recurrence-free survival (RFS) (97.2% vs. 91.2%, P>0.05). Conclusion: Compared with the open procedure, laparoscopic resection of gastric stromal tumors has fewer traumas and is recovered more quickly, with similar recurrence rate. Therefore, the laparoscopic surgery is safe, feasible, and its oncologic outcome is similar with open surgery.
