Biography

Dr. Surya Shah has been a leading occupational therapist for many years. He has worked in four continents as a clinician, a private practitioner, an educator, a program chair, a researcher and a professional and personal mentor. His qualifications include OTD (India), PhD in “Stroke Rehabilitation” (UK), MEd (Australia), and an OTR (USA). In 2005, he was inducted to the Roster of Fellows FAOTA for “Advancing Evidence-Based Occupational Therapy and Science”. In 2006, the Kentucky OT Association presented a title of Kentucky Colonel for “his “Outstanding Continuing Education Contributions”. In 2007, the Tennessee OT Association presented him the award of “Excellence for Exemplary Leadership in Setting Standards of Excellence in Research in the Field of Occupational Therapy”. In 2011, the American Occupational Therapy Foundation awarded him their highest honor by inducting him to the Academy of Research for his “Exemplary and Distinguished Contributions toward the Science of Occupational Therapy”.

Research Interest

Dr. Suryakumar Shah curriculum vitae attests, he has published extensively his research in some 27 journals and disseminated his findings in 49 cities around the globe. He has researched many aspects of quality of life of people with disability, with the primary focus of his research on people with cerebrovascular stroke and issues such as admission patterns, incidence, measurement, rehabilitation, outcomes such as prediction, efficiency and effectiveness and wellness after transient ischemia. One of his functional measures, the Modified Barthel Index (MBI) for dependency needs of people with disability has been translated in numerous languages and is one of the most translated modifications by an occupational therapist. Merck & Co in their multinational multicenter trial chose the MBI as the measure for the rehabilitation outcome and had MAPI Linguistic Center in France translate the MBI in 11 languages in consultation with him. In 2012, Abbott Laboratories chose his MBI measure for their 22 nation trial on brain injury. All translations will be completed by MAPI, France by January 2013. His other research was on the use of EMG for activity analysis, spinal injuries, orthotics, evaluation of clinical learning and teaching; cultural competency and so on. His current research is with Genesis rehab Care where he is establishing benchmarks of functional outcome for 10 diagnostic groups involving 35,000 persons following rehabilitation in nursing homes and assisted living.
