Abstract

Introduction: A selective Cox-2 inhibitor, Etoricoxib, has been found to be efficient in the management of acute post surgery pain. Herein we study the effect of preemptive use of oral etoricoxib on the overall patient satisfaction and post operative pain relief in patients undergoing lumbar spine surgery Methods: In this prospective, randomized, controlled study, fifty four patients (ASA grade 1&2, age 18-65 years) planned to undergo single level lumber laminectomy were given either placebo (control group) or Etoricoxib 120 mg orally one hour before surgery. All the patients were started with fentanyl PCA pump. Visual analog score (VAS) was assessed at 0, 6, 12, 18 and 24 hours at rest and movement. Primary end point was complete pain relief over 24 hours. Total fentanyl consumption, occurrence of nausea, vomiting, and patient satisfaction was noted. Results: Fifty two patients completed the study. Reduction in VAS at rest and on movement was observed in Etoricoxib group compared with Control group at all the point of time until 24 hour postoperatively (P<0.05). Overall fentanyl consumption (�¼g/ kg/hr) was higher in Control group (P=0.007). More patients in Etoricoxib group had a satisfied facial expression (p=0.003), stress free body language (p=0.00) and excellent sleep at night than control group (p=0.0004). Conclusion: Preoperative single oral dose of Etoricoxib, given before surgery, has significantly reduced the post operative pain at rest and movement and improved overall patient satisfaction in patients undergoing single level laminectomy without any side effects.
