In the developed countries, efforts are made since decades to protect the health and safety of the workers in all sectors. This
resulted in the publications of standards, technical reports and regulations. Guides in particular sectors are also available
and media campaigns to raise the awareness of the issue of occupational health are also implemented. On the other hand,
developing countries are still way too far in implementing such strategies. This presentation focuses on the current status of
the occupational safety and health regulations in Libya. Libya is one of the developing countries situated in North Africa. The
country has gone a recent diplomatic transition since 2011.
This presentation provides a detailed review of the current occupational health and safety regulations in Libya in comparison
with the developed countries. This presentation also provides an insight into all the Libyan health and welfare regulation and to
explore to what level is occupational health is being regulated and promoted in the country. It is aimed that this study provides
evidence to the policy makers in Libya that a comprehensive review of the current laws and regulations must be conducted so
that these laws can be reviewed and to meet the current changes in the working environment, to cope with the work-related
stress, medical and health checks as well as work and life balance. The study also provides actionable recommendations in
order to help the Libyan authorities in issuing new safety regulations related to the protection of workers in the workplace in
accordance with the international requirements.
Biography
Mustafa Elmontsri has a BSc (Hons) in Occupational Safety and Health and MSc in Risk Management from Middlesex University London. He is a researcher
at Brent Clinical Commission Group and also working towards his PhD in Patient Safety from Imperial College London. He is ex-director of the International
Cooperation Department and also served as a Lecturer in Occupational Safety and Risk Management at the Occupational Safety and Health Institute in Libya.
